アメリカキャストとの共演、そして全編英語上演という大きな挑戦に不安もありつつ、2年前の日米合作「RENT」での経験を経て、今回はよりリラックスした気持ちで臨んでいます。不安よりも挑戦できる楽しみの方が大きく、いい意味で“Nothing to Lose”（失うものは何もない）という感覚で臨めているのも今だからこそ。本作「フル・モンティ」が描く、どん底から一歩踏み出し自分をさらけ出す勇気と前向きなエネルギーを体現しながら、観る方の心にまっすぐ届く舞台をお届けしたいです。

2000年、ブロードウェイで初演された『フル・モンティ』は、非常に魅力的で完成度の高い作品でありながら、『プロデューサーズ』とのトニー賞レースに惜しくも敗れました。その後、全米ツアーが始動しましたが、2001年9月のアメリカ同時多発テロ事件の影響もあり、決して平坦ではない道のりを歩んできました。 私自身は俳優としてこのツアーでイーサン役を演じましたが、再びこの素晴らしい作品が日の目を見ることを、心から嬉しく思っています。

 一歩を踏み出す勇気――それは時代を超えて色褪せることのないテーマです。本作はそのメッセージを、たくさんの笑いとともに軽やかに届けてくれます。

 2024年に『RENT』で共に作品づくりに取り組んだ山本耕史さん、そして笑いで世界に挑戦し続けるゆりやんレトリィバァさん、さらにブロードウェイのキャストとともに、最高の笑いと感動をお届けします。 25年以上前の作品でありながら、登場人物たちに自分を重ね、笑い、そして涙できる普遍的な力を持った作品です。 どうぞお楽しみください。

 

 

●ストーリー

ニューヨーク州の郊外にある街・バッファロー。今は閉鎖された製鉄所で働いていたジェリーは失業中で、職安に通う日々をすごしている。一人息子ネイサンの教育費も払えず、離婚した元妻パムに親権を奪われそうになっていた。職安には親友のデイブや元上司のハロルドなど、かつての仲間たちも同じように仕事を探しに通っている。そんなある日、ジェリーとデイブは女性たちが男性ストリップショーに熱狂している光景を目にする。その中にはデイブの妻ジョージーの姿もあった。男性ストリッパーの肉体美などについて興奮気味に話している様子に衝撃を受けたジェリーは「自分たちもストリップで一儲けできるのでは」と思い立つ。

メンバーに集まったのは体型にコンプレックスを抱えるデイブ、内気なマルコム、社交ダンス経験のある元上司ハロルド、年配のホース、そして自信満々のイーサンなど事情も性格もバラバラな男たち。慣れないダンスに悪戦苦闘しながらも、彼らは少しずつ心を通わせていく。やがて彼らは、”全てをさらけ出す” という大胆なアイデアに挑もうとするが、さまざまな壁が立ちはだかるーー。はたして、６人の男たちは自分自身の殻を破り、人生を変える一歩を踏み出すことができるのか？！

 

●ミュージカル『フル・モンティ』とは-

1997年のイギリスの同名映画『フル・モンティ』をもとに、舞台をニューヨーク州の田舎町バッファローにうつし舞台化されたブロードウェイミュージカル。2000年10月にブロードウェイ初演を迎え、翌2001年のトニー賞には作品賞を含む９部門にノミネート。トニー賞のほか、ドラマ・デスク賞（1部門受賞、10部門ノミネート）、アウター・クリティックス・サークル賞（1部門受賞、6部門ノミネート）、ドラマ・リーグ賞にもノミネートされ、好評を博した。日本では2002年に東京、大阪、福岡で来日公演を開催。2014年には日本語上演版（演出：福田雄一、主演：山田孝之）が行われた。そして2026年夏、初の日米合同のキャストで上演される『フル・モンティ』が誕生する。

A new international production of The Full Monty is set to play Japan this summer, starring Koji Yamamoto and Yuriyan Retriever alongside a cast of Broadway performers.

 

Directed by Trey Ellett, the production will star Koji Yamamoto as Jerry and Yuriyan Retriever (comedian and America’s Got Talent performer) as Georgie, joined by an international company including Adam Chanler-Berat as Malcolm, John Hemphill as Harold, Charles E. Wallace as Horse, Stephen Rochet Lopez as Ethan, and Michael Graceffa as Keno. Additional casting includes Kelsey Venter as Pam, Coleen Sexton as Vicki, and Mylinda Hull as Jeanette, along with an ensemble featuring Alana Cauthen, Olivia Cece, Gregory Haney, Cody Jenkins, Natalie Joy Johnson, Missy Moreno, James Schoppe, and Jamison Stern. Jennifer Hemphill will serve as swing.

 

Set in Buffalo, New York, The Full Monty follows a group of unemployed steelworkers who, desperate for money and a sense of purpose, decide to form a male strip act. As they struggle with insecurity, pride, and personal hardship, the men gradually find friendship, courage, and a renewed sense of self—ultimately daring to bare everything in more ways than one.

 

Based on the hit 1997 British film of the same name, the musical features a book by Terrence McNally and a score by David Yazbek. The original Broadway production opened in 2000 and received nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and went on to earn additional recognition from the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

The Full Monty is presented in Japan by special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

 

This new production marks the first-ever Japan–U.S. collaboration for The Full Monty, performed entirely in English with Japanese subtitles and featuring a live orchestra. Yamamoto, who previously appeared in the Japan–U.S. co-production of RENT in 2024, reunites with Ellett for this new staging.

 

The creative team will also include choreographer Paul McGill, music supervisor Catherine A. Walker, orchestrator Harold Wheeler, vocal and incidental music arranger Ted Sperling, and dance music arranger Zane Mark.

 

Performances will begin August 19 at Tokyo International Forum Hall C, running through September 7, before transferring to Osaka’s Shin Kabukiza Theatre from September 10 through 14.

Tickets will go on pre-sale beginning April 25, with general sales starting June 6.
